Potential Organ Donor Identification

  1. Discuss the patient's prognosis with the health care team.
  2. Contact the LOPA representative when the patient is on a ventilator with the Glascow Coma Scale (GCS)  less than or greater than 5 or if the patient is on a ventilator with the possibility of discontinuation of mechanical and pharmacological support or if the patient has a life threatening illness.  
  3. Wash hands, and don nonsterile gloves.
  4. Obtain laboratory samples as prescribed.
  5. Monitor vital signs.
  6. Monitor fluid status.
  7. Assist with brain death determination.
  8. Assist the physician when he or she informs the family of the results of the brain death determination.
