Fetal Blood Transfusion

  1. Perform hand hygeine
  2. Verify correct patient using two identifiers. 
  3. Prior to start of the transfusion, two nurses must verify correct patient and correct blood product. 
  4. Before the procedure, comply with Universal Protocol requirements. 
  5. Ensure all relevant studies and documents, including informed consent, are available. 
  6. Participate in a “time out” to verify correct patient, procedure, and site. 
  7. Assist with ultrasound imaging as directed, such as repositioning the mother. 
  8. Assist with conscious sedation procedure per the physician's orders. 
  9. Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene. Apply clean gloves. 
  10. Cleanse the mother's abdomen with an antiseptic solution. 
  11. Ensure the blood product is at body temperature. 
  12. Administer the transfusion within 30 minutes of receiving the blood product from the blood bank. 
  13. Keep the family informed of any adverse reactions or of when the fetus has successfully received the transfusion. 
  14. Discard used supplies, remove gloves, and perform hand hygiene. 
  15. Document the procedure in the patient's record.
