Isometric Exercises

  Instruct patient to perform the following isometric exercises as prescribed:

Quadriceps isometric exercises:

   1. Assist patient to supine recumbent position.
   2. Instruct patient to press back of the knee against mattress while trying to lift heel from bed.
   3. Hold muscles tightly contracted for 5 to 15 seconds, and then relax completely for several seconds.
   4. Repeat exercise.

Gluteal muscle isometric exercises:

   1. Assist patient to supine position.
   2. Instruct patient to pinch buttocks muscles together and hold for 5 to 15 seconds and then relax completely for several seconds.
   3. Repeat exercise.

Abdominal muscle isometric exercises:

   1. Have patient pull abdominal muscles in as tightly as possible.
   2. Hold for 5 to 15 seconds. Release muscles gradually.
   3. Repeat exercise.

Foot muscle isometric exercises:

   1. Instruct patient to flex foot toward and away from knee holding each position for 5 to 15 seconds.
   2. Repeat exercise.

Hand muscle isometric exercises:

   1. Obtain sponge rubber ball.
   2. Have patient grip ball with entire hand 5 to 10 times.
   3. Dig each fingertip, one at a time, into ball 5 to 10 times each.
   4. Gradually increase frequency of exercise until patient can grip ball and exercise once or twice a day.

Biceps isometric exercises:

   1. Have patient raise arms to shoulder height and interlock fingertips of both hands.
   2. Try to pull hands apart using arm muscles.
   3. Hold for 5 to 15 seconds.
   4. Relax and repeat exercise.

Triceps muscle isometric exercises:

   1. Have patient raise arms to shoulder height.
   2. Make fist with one hand and place against palm of other hand.
   3. Push hands together as hard as possible for 5 to 15 seconds.
   4. Relax and repeat exercise.

Instruct patient to perform the following additional isometric exercises:
Triceps muscle isometric exercises:

   1. Assist patient to sitting position on edge of bed or in chair. If mattress is soft, blocks or books are placed on bed under patient's hands.
   2. Instruct patient to try to lift buttocks off bed or seat of chair by pressing down on mattress or chair seat with hands.
   3. Hold muscles tight for 5 to 15 seconds, then relax.
   4. Repeat exercise.

Quadriceps muscle isometric exercises:

   1. Have patient push feet against footboard.
   2. Hold muscles tight for 5 to 15 seconds, then relax.
   3. Repeat exercise.
