Epidural Catheter Removal

1.Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.
2.Verify the patient's identity using two patient identifiers in accordance with institutional policy.
3.Assist the patient to a sitting or side-lying position with lower back arched outward and expose the patient's back.
4.Remove the tape from back and shoulder to expose the catheter site.
5.Apply gentle, steady traction to remove the catheter.
6.Check the tip of the catheter for a blue or black mark.
7.If the removed catheter is intact, discard it per institutional policy.
8.Cleanse the epidural site with an antiseptic wipe and cover the site with a small adhesive bandage.
9.Cleanse the patient's back of any blood or secretions.
10.Remove gloves and discard in proper trash receptacle. Perform hand hygiene.
11.Document the procedure in the patient's record.
