Fundal Massage

  1. Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.
  2. Verify the patient's identity using two patient identifiers in accordance with institutional policy.
  3. Position the patient supine, with her knees flexed.
  4. Cup one hand over the top of the fundus and the other hand on the lower portion of the uterus at the symphysis pubis, ensuring proper placement of the hands.
  5. Massage the fundus gently.
  6. Apply firm downward pressure, toward the vagina, to expel any clots.
  7. Perform pericare.
  8. Remove gloves and discard in proper trash receptacle. Perform hand hygiene.
  9. Document the procedure in the patient's record.
