Guided Imagery for Pain Management

  1. Assess for signs and symptoms of pain; determine pain characteristics and intensity.
  2. Assess patient’s willingness and ability to receive nonpharmacologic pain relief.
  3. Instruct patient to imagine that inhaled air is a ball of healing energy traveling to the painful area.
  4. Alternatively, suggest patient imagine being in a pleasant, restful place (such as beach) and experience it with all five senses while breathing deeply, slowly, and rhythmically.
  5. Direct patient to count to three, inhale, and open eyes. Suggest patient move about slowly initially.
  6. Document Actions
