Apnea Monitor Education Maternal Newborn

  Assess the family's knowledge retained from equipment provider's inservice. 
  1. Assess supply of electrodes with monitor.
  2. Assess battery charge of monitor.
  3. Obtain monitor as prescribed by the physician.
  4. Position the infant for application of the monitor.
  5. Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.
  6. Verify the patient's identity using two patient identifiers in accordance with institutional policy.
  7. Guide the family through applying the monitor, assisting and educating as needed.
  8. Expose the infant's chest or abdomen area.
  9. Apply electrodes per manufacturer's instructions.
  10. Apply band to secure electrodes in position.
  11. Redress the infant and position in car seat prior to being discharged.
  12. Turn on the monitor.
  13. Observe for correct reading of heart rate and respirations as evidenced by blinking lights. Compare to the infant's actual respirations.
  14. Remove gloves and discard in proper trash receptacle. Perform hand hygiene.
  15. Review alarm troubleshooting and teaching with the family.
  16. Monitor the infant for true apneic episodes while on monitor.
  17. Document the procedure in the patient's record.
