Bilirubin Meter: Irradiance Measuring

  1. Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.
  2. Verify the patient's identity using two patient identifiers in accordance with institutional policy.
  3. Hold the light-sensitive end, or the "bell," of the bilimeter directly over or on the same level as the infant's abdomen, or the same level as the back if the infant is pronated. Push the designated button to obtain the reading.
  4. Obtain the irradiance readings at various locations over the infant's body.
  5. Adjust the height and position of the lights and troubleshoot as needed to obtain a reading as ordered by the physician or per unit policy. Overirradiation of an infant is unlikely.
  6. Replace the equipment if unable to obtain the desired irradiance readings, and then repeat the procedure to obtain new irradiance readings.
  7. Remove gloves and discard in proper trash receptacle. Perform hand hygiene.
  8. Document the procedure in the patient's record.
