Circumcision: Assisting

  Procedure

  1. Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.
  2. Verify the patient's identity using two patient identifiers in accordance with institutional policy.
  3. Position the patient on padded plastic restraint form in accordance with institutional policy.
  4. Call or participate in a "time out" before initiating an invasive procedure in accordance with institutional   policy.
  5. Expose and clean the penis in accordance with institutional policy.
  6. Provide a warm blanket for upper body of the infant and maintain infant safety as the practitioner drapes the surgical area and prepares equipment.
  7. Comfort the infant and maintain patient restraint throughout procedure.
  8. Provide a pacifier dipped in sucrose.
  9. Talk to the infant.
  10. Play soft music or recordings of intrauterine sounds.
  11. Practice developmental care.
  12. Have supplies for penile block at bedside.
  13. After the procedure, apply petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment and/or gauze to the site if Gomco method used.
  14. Apply a diaper and remove infant from restraint form.
  15. Console the infant as needed.
  16. Remove gloves and discard in proper trash receptacle. Perform hand hygiene.
