Metabolic Screening

  1. Confirm that informed consent for procedure has been obtained.
  2. Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.
  3. Verify the patient's identity using two patient identifiers in accordance with institutional policy.
  4. Bundle the infant except for the designated heel and provide sucrose and pacifier per unit policy.
  5. Position the infant's leg to increase venous pressure (i.e., below the infant's heart level). Perform the heel stick in accordance with institutional policy.
  6. Wipe away the first drop of blood. Apply a single large drop of blood to the center of each filter-paper circle on the form.
  7. Cleanse excess blood from the heel stick site and apply a bandage.
  8. After the procedure, provide comfort to the infant.
  9. Place the form on a drying rack for at least 4 hours.
  10. Remove gloves and discard with supplies in proper trash receptacles. Perform hand hygiene.
  11. Document the procedure in the patient's record.
