Phototherapy Newborn

  1. Perform hand hygiene.
  2. Verify the patient's identify using two patient identifiers in accordance with institutional policy.
  3. Place the infant on the radiant warmer or in the incubator.
  4. Remove all clothing from the infant.
  5. Apply eye protection over the infant's closed eyes securely, but not tightly.
  6. Position the appropriate equipment at bedside per institutional policy and manufacturer recommendations.
  7. Plug all equipment into grounded outlets, inspecting cords to make sure they are intact.
  8. Turn the equipment on and verify correct light placement for maximum skin coverage.
  9. Measure the total overhead irradiance using a bilimeter. Adjust the height of lights and troubleshoot to obtain a reading as ordered by practitioner or per unit or institutional policy.
  10. Perform hand hygiene.
  11. Document the procedure in the patient's record.
